Cades Cove Smokey Mountain National Park

Hyatt Lane in Cades Cove by Richard Lewis 2014

What’s it like to spend a week in Smokey Mountain National Park on a photo tour? Add two very talented photographers, John Barclay and Dan Sniffin as leaders, 12 participants and it equals an amazingly creative experience. That’s what I was doing last week.

This image is from Cades Cove, a beautiful little valley within the park. The barn off in the distance first caught my eye. What really stood out after I set up my camera was how the wet road seems to glow in the soft, foggy light.

How I Did It – The Smokies got their name from the abundance of fog that rises from the valley floor and looks like smoke. Photographing fog can result in flat images that lack contrast. In this image, contrast was added selectively throughout the scene using multiple Curves layers in Photoshop.

More of the Smokies to come.

Enjoy!
