Creating a Photography Challenge

My wife is a quilter which means I am often accompanying her to quilt shows. By the way, I’m a willing participant because seeing this beautiful fabric art is very inspiring for my photography. One of these quilt shows was held at the historic Kirby’s Mill, a restored grist mill, in Medford New Jersey. At this show my inspiration turned out to be not just the quilts.

What usually happens at these shows is that I walk through relatively quickly while my wife stops to examine the quilts in detail and talk with her fellow quilters. This usually leaves me with a bit of free time. The vendors at the Kirby’s Mill show were sporting signs urging the quilters to “Shop Local” which inspired me to use that free time to do a little “Photograph Local” project. The idea was to photograph the mill and create some images that I would really be proud of. Here is the result with both a regular camera and an iPhone.

Photographers should always be challenging themselves. Every photographer from beginner to master will improve by taking on projects, or coming up with ideas, that stretch their skills and creativity.
