See How To Help Preserve The Pinelands With Your Photography

Of all the seasons to be photographing the New Jersey Pinelands, summer can be the most challenging. It’s not just the heat or the bugs, the landscape also changes drastically and may not look the same as it does in the other seasons. Plus the long days mean waking up early for 5am sunrises and staying out late when the sun sets around 9pm. Still, there is always beauty no matter when you visit the Pinelands. Here are some of my landscape photographs from this summer.

Morning

Morning sunrises and mist create beautiful and peaceful scenes in the Pinelands. With long days, it means getting up very early. Still it is worthwhile to give up a little sleep to be out there experiencing the day’s beginning.

Summer Storms

Storm light, the eerie sunlight that filters through storm clouds, has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. This summer, armed with good rain gear, I headed out to photograph storm light in the Pinelands. I may be one of the few people who actually appreciated the unusually rainy summer here in New Jersey.

Afternoon and Evening

Late afternoon is another great time to be in the Pinelands watching the day settle down. Every now and then you get treated to a colorful sunset and even a rainbow.

Twilight

Sometimes the best colors in the sky happen after the sun sets. Even when that doesn’t happen, the solemn and quiet mood of the evening is a peaceful thing to experience.

Help Preserve The Pinelands With Your Camera!

Environmental adversity isn’t anything new in the Pinelands. This area has survived industrialization in the 18th and 19th centuries and attempted overdevelopment in the 20th and 21st centuries.

One organization whose sole mission is to protect and preserve this special northeastern wilderness is the Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA). I am honored to be the volunteer co-chair this year for their Annual Pinelands Photography exhibition. If you have photographed the Pines, enter this exhibition. In addition to being eligible for some of the over $2000 in prizes, it is a chance to support the PPA’s mission to preserve the New Jersey Pinelands by showing just how beautiful the Pines are through your photography.
