Ruins vs. Abandoned

So what is the difference between an abandoned place and a ruin? To me when a building still exists, but loses all evidence of human habitation it’s a ruin. Until then it is abandoned because the building still tells the personal story of its human history. With a ruin, the only thing left is the architectural style and building materials, usually stone. It holds a place in our history, but the personal story of that  history is no longer obvious.
